**How to Jump a Car**
If you find yourself with a dead battery, follow these steps to jump-start your car:
**Before Jump-Starting:**
1. **Check the Battery Condition:** Ensure the battery is not leaking, damaged, frozen, or corroded. If it appears unsafe, consult a mechanic.
2. **Remove Metal Objects and Avoid Flames:** Clear any metal objects and sources of ignition from around the battery.
3. **Remove the Car Key:** Keep the ignition key in a safe place.
4. **Consult Your Owner’s Manual:** Check for specific jump-starting instructions for your vehicle.
5. **Verify Battery Voltage:** Ensure both vehicles have batteries with the same voltage, typically 12 volts.
**Jump-Starting Procedure:**
1. **Prepare Both Vehicles:** Put each car in park or neutral, turn off the ignition, engage the parking brake, and open the hoods. Make sure the vehicles are not touching.
2. **Connect the Jumper Cables:**
- **RED to DEAD:** Attach the red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
- **RED to DONOR:** Attach the red clamp to the positive terminal of the donor vehicle’s battery.
- **BLACK to DONOR:** Attach the black clamp to the negative terminal of the donor vehicle’s battery.
- **BLACK to METAL:** Connect the black clamp to an unpainted metal part of the dead vehicle, away from the battery.
3. **Start the Donor Car:** Let it run for 1-2 minutes.
4. **Start the Dead Vehicle:** Allow it to run for 1-2 minutes to recharge the battery.
**After Jump-Starting:**
1. **Remove the Cables:** Disconnect the cables in reverse order.
2. **Drive Your Car:** Drive for at least 30 minutes to fully recharge the battery.
If your battery frequently dies, consider a replacement. For battery replacement, maintenance, or other automotive services, contact a professional mechanic or schedule an appointment online.
